Internship

ANSWERS TO THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT INTERNSHIPS
Q: WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?
A: An internship is a brief period of on-the-job training in an organized structure such as a company or private studio. It’s an opportunity to learn first-hand about the workplace thanks to the one-on-one coaching of expert professionals.

Q: WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF AN INTERNSHIP?
A. An internship rounds out your academic career with a hands-on experience in a professional environment.

Q: WHO IS THE COMPANY SUPERVISOR?
A: The Company Supervisor is your contact person at the company and it’s his/her responsibility to follow your training progress. You should go to him/her with any questions or doubts during your stay at the company.

Q: WHO IS THE UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR?
A: The University Supervisor is your contact person in the university who will monitor your internship performance. His/her name can be found in your Internship Document and you can speak with him/her about any concerns or questions you have about your internship.

Q: WHERE CAN I DO AN INTERNSHIP?
A. You can do an internship in India or outside India, in a private or public company, a service company, a bank, an auditing or consulting firm, a professional firm, a public organization or national institution, a cultural association, an international organization, at an embassy or in a chamber of commerce.

Q: WHEN CAN I DO MY INTERNSHIP?
A:An internship can begin at any time of the year. However, if you want the internship to count as your curricular internship for academic credit it must be done in a specific period of your academic career:

Q: CAN I DO AN INTERNSHIP IN A COMPANY OWNED BY MY FAMILY?
A: No, not if you wish it to count as your curricular internship. Yes, if it’s an extra-curricular internship. The university believes it’s important for students to have an internship experience in the workplace, outside of a family setting. You should take advantage of the tools offered to you by the Markets Division to help you find a new internship experience.

Q: CAN I DO A PART-TIME INTERNSHIP?
A: Usually an internship should be full-time. A part-time internship will only be approved in exceptional circumstances and then only when it lasts a minimum of 8 weeks in India and abroad.

Q: ARE THERE INTERNSHIP CONTRACTS?
A: An internship is not a job and therefore there is no official contract. However, it is governed by an agreement called an Internship Convention which is set up between the University and the Host Institution as well as by an Internship Document, which regulates the individual internships and is signed by the University, Host Institution, and the Intern. These closely related documents are prepared by the University prior to the start of an internship, both for those conducted in India as well as for those abroad. Without these documents your experience will not be considered an internship.

Q: WILL I BE PAID FOR MY INTERNSHIP?
A: Since by law there is no work contract for an internship, you should not expect to be paid for it. However, a company may choose to compensate you for your work and time with a scholarship.

Q: MAY I BEGIN MY INTERNSHIP EVEN IF THE INTERNSHIP DOCUMENTS STILL NEED TO BE SIGNED?
A: No. The University will not award credit to any experience which has not been formalized. This means that all the appropriate documents must be signed by the relevant parties (company, university, and intern) before the internship begins.

Q: WILL THE UNIVERSITY MONITOR THE INTERNSHIP?
A: Yes. The Internship Office will check to see if the internship activities are effectively being carried out as planned. The internship will be annulled if there are reports of excessive absenteeism.

Q: HOW MANY INTERNSHIPS CAN I DO?
A: During your studies you may participate in more than one internship. However, only one internship may count for curricular credit per university degree.

Q: WHICH DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO HAND IN AT THE END OF MY INTERNSHIP?
A: At the end of the internship you must bring the following documents to the Internship Office:
– a copy of the final internship evaluation form (together with a final internship report for those internships held outside of Italy) completed by you, the intern.
-a copy of the preliminary internship authorization email sent to you by the Director of your Study Program/Major (only required for curricular internships at the MSc level).
– a Certificate from your host institution/company stating that you have completed your internship.
– the final internship evaluation form completed by your company tutor will be printed out at the Internship Office front desk when you come to hand in the documents listed above.
Remember that it’s your responsibility to make sure the final internship evaluation form is completed by your Company Supervisor.

Q: HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT MY COMPANY TUTOR HAS COMPLETED MY EVALUATION FORM?
A: You can verify this in your yoU@B agenda. If the warning “Attention: your Supervisor has not completed the internship evaluation form” appears it means that the tutor has not already filled out the form. If it does not appear it means that it has been completed. Remember that you will not be given the internship recognition form until the evaluation form has been received by the Internship Office.
At the beginning of your internship, the Supervisor will receive an email with you in c.c.- with the link to the evaluation form. If at the end of your internship the Company Supervisor is unable to find his/her copy this email you can forward it to him/her from your studbocconi email account.

Q: IS IT POSSIBLE TO SEE OTHER STUDENTS’ INTERNSHIP EVALUATION FORMS?
A: Yes. The final internship evaluations are available upon request at the Internship Office.

Q: HOW MANY CREDITS WILL I RECEIVE FOR MY INTERNSHIP?
A: If you’re an undergraduate student you can substitute an optional exam in the Italian language with an internship; you will receive six (6) credits for your experience. To understand how a curricular internship may impact your final graduation grade, please see Final Work.
If you’re an MSc student, you will receive from six (6) to ten (10) credits for your internship, depending on the academic plan in your Study Program (Major).

Q: CAN I RECEIVE CREDIT FOR MY INTERNSHIP IF IT’S NOT OVER YET?
A: In general, your internship should be recognized for credit at the end of the period agreed upon in your Internship Document. However, the Internship Office may recognize an internship for academic credit in the case where an intern needs to graduate prior to having completed his/her internship but has already completed the minimum number of weeks necessary to obtain academic credit.
